SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—In anticipation of National Senior Citizens Day on Friday on August 21, County Executive Ilene Shapiro is encouraging residents of all ages to recognize the value of older adults and help create spaces where everyone can age with dignity, purpose, and connection.
In 2020, Summit County earned the Age-Friendly designation from AARP and since then has remained committed to ensuring the community is livable for all people. Through the Age-Friendly initiative, the County works alongside community partners to create opportunities that support residents as they age, with a focus on social participation, civic engagement, and inclusion.
This year to recognize National Senior Citizens Day, Executive Shapiro has compiled a list of senior-friendly events for residents to explore with friends and loved ones throughout the summer. The guide highlights arts and culture programs, music and entertainment, outdoor recreation, educational opportunities, community gatherings, and intergenerational activities. Residents are encouraged to explore the activities and share the list with older adults throughout the community.
“Older adults are an essential part of what makes Summit County a strong and vibrant community,” said County Executive Shapiro. “National Senior Citizens Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate their contributions and ensure they have access to meaningful opportunities to stay connected and enjoy all that Summit County has to offer.”
