SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—The Summit County Historical Society, in partnership with Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, will host the America250-OH Homecoming for Summit County on Sunday, August 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the historic Perkins Stone Mansion and John Brown House located at 550 Copley Road, Akron.
The free, family-friendly event is part of America250-Ohio’s statewide Homecoming & Picnic initiative, celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary and honoring Summit County’s rich history and heritage.
Guests are invited to bring a blanket and spend the afternoon enjoying a full slate of old-fashioned community fun, including:
- A traditional cake walk
- A watermelon-eating contest sponsored by Acme Fresh Market
- Live music throughout the afternoon
- Sheep herding demonstrations featuring volunteer shepherdess Edie Steiner, her working dogs, and Kerry Hill lambs from Top Shelf Farm
- Classic lawn games for all ages
- Tours of the Perkins Stone Mansion (the home of Akron’s & Summit County’s founding family) and John Brown House
- A dunk tank
- Touch a Truck
