SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—On Monday, January 25, 2021, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and County Council passed a resolution declaring February as Black History Month. The resolution recognizes Black people in America and the achievements they have made throughout the nation’s history.

“Black people in America and within Summit County have made and continue to make important, innovative, and downright incredible contributions to our nation and our communities. This month, we recognize these achievements and encourage our community to recognize the incredible feats of Black people in America throughout the year, while uplifting those currently working to make this nation a better place for all. Black history- the successes, obstacles, and victories of our black and brown neighbors is American history,” said Executive Shapiro.

“Black History Month is always important to recognize and never more so than this year as we begin 2021 with a Black woman of African and Asian descent serving, for the first time ever, as Vice President of the United States. This is a sign of triumphant progress following a year of racial reckoning,” said Council Member Veronica Sims. “Despite this progress, we still have much work to do.”

In recognition of Black History Month, the Akron-Summit County Public Library has planned several virtual events for children, teens and adults. To view the events and register to attend, please visit https://services.akronlibrary.org/events.
