IRS creates tool for non-filers to register for Economic Impact Payments

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—The Internal Revenue Service launched a new web tool allowing those who don’t normally file a tax return to easily and quickly register for their Economic Impact Payment. The tool is available at https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here.

The non-filer tool is a free and easy option designed for individuals who were not required to file a tax return. The feature is available only on IRS.gov, and users should look for “Non-filers: Enter Payment Info Here” to take them directly to the tool. Users will be asked to provide basic information, including Social Security number, name, address, and dependents.

The IRS will use this information to confirm eligibility, and calculate and send an Economic Impact Payment. Using the tool to get a payment will not result in any taxes being owed. Entering bank or financial account information will allow the IRS to deposit payment directly in an account. Otherwise, payment will be mailed.

Individuals who fall into one of the following categories should use the non-filer tool: individuals who did not file a 2018 or 2019 tax return and who do not receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits; single filers who made under $12,200 and married couples making less than $24,400 in 2019; veterans beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients; Social Security, SSDI and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries with qualifying dependents; students who have not been claimed as a dependent on a tax return.

To help individuals check on the status of their payments, the IRS is building a second new tool expected to be available for use by April 17. Get My Payment will provide individuals with the status of their payment, including the date their payment is scheduled to be deposited into their bank account or mailed to them. The Get My Payment tool will allow eligible individuals to provide their bank account information so they can receive their payment more quickly rather than waiting for a paper check. This feature will be unavailable if the Economic Impact Payment has already been scheduled for delivery.

Below is the estimated timeline for the Economic Impact Payments:

  • Week of April 13: The IRS will mail 60 million payments to Americans through direct deposit. The IRS has direct deposit information for these individuals from their 2018 or 2019 tax returns.
  • Week of May 4: The IRS will begin issuing paper checks to individuals. The paper checks will be issued at a rate of about 5 million per week. The checks will be issued in reverse “adjusted gross income” order—individuals with the lowest income will receive checks first.
