Northfield Village police and fire crews handled a mix of medical emergencies, vehicle thefts and impaired driving stops over the holiday week, according to the department’s blotter. Officers also booked a man on an outstanding warrant during a casino patrol and investigated a reported shooting that turned out to lack evidence.
Medical Calls at the Racino and Sunset Motel
Officers were flagged down at the Sunset Motel on July 1 after a caller reported an unresponsive man in a room. CPR was started and Narcan was administered before Northfield Village Fire Department took over and transported the patient to Ahuja Medical Center.
Later that same day, officers responded to Northfield Park Racino for a 911 hang up reporting a hard fall. A search of the parking lot turned up nothing, but casino management said a man had fallen inside and refused medical treatment. He was helped into a gaming chair and later left the property.
On July 2, fire crews assisted a woman on Huntington Drive who had fallen. She received a lift assist back to her couch and declined medical transport.
A woman was treated for suspected heat exhaustion at the Racino on July 3. A report was taken for documentation and the case is closed.
Two Vehicles Reported Stolen on Summit Avenue
A theft investigation opened on July 2 after a vehicle went missing from Summit Avenue.
A second theft was reported on the same street July 4. The owner told officers his beige 1999 Mercury Villager van, which had a wooden ladder rack on top and an Ohio license plate reading HIE 3773, had been taken from his driveway. He said the vehicle was last seen parked around 5 p.m. the previous day and that it had been left unlocked with the keys inside. The van was entered into the LEADS database as stolen.
Two Drivers Arrested on OVI Charges
Police were dispatched to World Wine and Liquor on July 4 after a caller reported an intoxicated woman leaving the store in her vehicle. Officers located the car matching the description and spoke with the driver, whom they believed was impaired. She was arrested on an OVI charge and the vehicle was towed by Interstate Towing. The case is closed.
A second OVI arrest followed on July 5 after a driver nearly caused a crash while turning out of the Summit Plaza parking lot. The driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic, and officers noted glossy eyes, nervous behavior and the odor of alcohol. An open container was also found in the vehicle. Field sobriety tests were conducted and the driver was arrested. That case is closed as well.
Trespass Arrest and Weapon Report at the Racino
A man banned for life from Northfield Park Racino was arrested during a business patrol late on July 3. An officer confirmed the ban with casino security staff and learned the man also had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear on a prior criminal trespass charge. He was taken into custody without incident and booked on the warrant along with a new trespass charge.
Separately, a woman called police directly on July 4 to report that an unknown man on a bicycle had fired a gun at her near the Sunset Motel about 15 minutes earlier. Officers investigated but said her account of events changed multiple times and no evidence supported the allegation. Investigators noted indicators that the woman may have been under the influence of narcotics or experiencing a mental health issue. She was advised that the contact would be documented.
