The Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to 8,205 calls for service in Northfield Center Township during 2025 and made 234 traffic stops, the sheriff reported to trustees at the April 13 regular meeting. Deputies made 14 arrests or issued 14 summonses in March alone, with 665 total service calls that month.
Crime Trends
Overall crime trends were mixed. Assaults, burglaries, and most major offenses have declined since 2021. Vandalism and vehicle break-ins are up, however. The sheriff attributed the vehicle break-in increase to a regional pattern of offenders traveling from outside the area and targeting vehicles left unlocked, including at businesses and grocery store parking lots.
“You’ve got to lock your vehicle,” the sheriff told trustees. The message applies not just at residences, but anywhere residents park.
The county reported zero kidnappings in the township during 2025. Thefts are up slightly, but officials described most as minor incidents involving items left visible inside unlocked vehicles.
Staffing Discussion
A longtime resident raised concerns about whether the township has adequate dedicated patrol coverage given population and road growth over three decades. The sheriff acknowledged the tension between staffing costs and service levels.
One dedicated deputy patrols Northfield Center Township around the clock, with one or two float cars available countywide. The sheriff said she believes current coverage is adequate but noted that an additional dedicated evening shift would be ideal. She said that decision ultimately comes down to finances, with a single deputy costing approximately $109,000 annually when salary, benefits, and retirement are included.
The township’s law enforcement contract with the Sheriff’s Office — totaling approximately $1,039,000 for 2026 — is up for renewal at the end of the year.
Specialty Units and Task Forces
The sheriff highlighted several regional resources available to the township. The office removed more than 200,000 grams of illegal drugs from Summit County streets in 2025 — approximately the weight of 32 bowling balls — through its drug unit. The Human Trafficking Task Force conducted 29 operations and arrested 37 suspects last year. The warrants division arrested 135 felons countywide.
Speed Limit Concern on Golden Link Boulevard
A separate issue raised during the meeting: Golden Link Boulevard has no posted speed limit signs. Under Ohio law, the default speed on a township road without posted signs is 55 mph. Trustees discussed placing speed limit signs promptly. Officials also mentioned exploring a portable speed display sign for Route 8, which has seen increased speeding.
