The Barbie Movie Review: Barbie Steps Out of Her Ground Hog Day Life and Roller Blades into the Real World

By Julie D’Aloiso

In the universe of Barbie, monotony is the norm. The film kicks off with Barbie’s optimistic proclamation: “Every day is the best day ever. Today, yesterday, tomorrow, and every day for eternity.” It’s a sentiment that echoes the cyclical narrative of ‘Groundhog Day’ – a film which, on reflection, could have benefited from the charismatic charm of Bill Murray.

Barbie’s life, once seemingly perfect in its plastic existence, starts to unravel. She wakes up one day to find things amiss – flat feet, unpleasant breath, and other anomalies that just don’t fit her flawless persona.

This film is less about Barbie’s wardrobe choices for a girls’ night out and more about challenging traditional gender roles.

In Barbie’s world, girls are the ruling class, and Ken is merely an accessory. However, when Barbie and Ken step into the real world, Ken discovers the societal power men wield and brings this newfound authority back to Barbie’s world, causing chaos. I won’t spoil too much, though.

One of the high points of the movie is its tribute to Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie. Rhea Perlman’s portrayal of Ruth adds depth to the narrative.

Ryan Gosling’s performance will undoubtedly alter your perception of him. Seeing him in a different role after this will be a challenge.

This film is not your typical Barbie adventure. Rated PG-13 for its ‘suggestive references’ and ‘brief language,’ it’s clear this isn’t a children’s movie.

Overall I will rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
