What’s New in Bathroom Tubs

Relaxing in a bathtub of warm soothing water is truly one of life’s small pleasures. As the largest element in the room, the bathtub is also a key player in creating the desired ambiance and style for your bathroom upgrade or remodeling project. Whether you choose a classic clawfoot or a modern whirlpool tub, the bathtub is the place for destressing and relieving tense muscles. Of course, it also functions as the place we enjoy soaking and washing ourselves.

There are four basic tub styles to choose from: Freestanding, alcove, drop-in and corner. Each has its advantages and disadvantages:

Freestanding tubs command attention as the focal point in a bathroom. These tubs can be placed anywhere in a bathroom without any wall or frames to support them. A few things to consider are that these tubs can be heavier than other types and will need floor reinforcement. As this tub is showerless, you will need to install a separate shower.

Alcove tubs are the most common type. These tubs fit on a three-wall enclosure. They are perfect for small bathrooms and can also be used for showering.

Drop-in tubs are best for larger bathrooms. As the name suggests, they are dropped into a prefabricated frame or deck and can be customized to fit any space.

Corner tubs can be customized to fit snugly in any space. This frees up space in the room for other elements. This cozy corner retreat can be outfitted with luxury features such as air jets, water jets and chromotherapy lighting.

Here are some exciting innovations in tub dĂ©cor that could convince you it’s time for a remodel:

Transparent tubs. While they may appear to be made of glass, tinted transparent tubs are actually made of innovative resin, a more practical material. These tubs are as durable as stone, yet they infuse an element of lightness and modern elegance into the space. While soaking, the bather appears to be almost floating in the tub.

Earthy elements. With a strong preference for natural materials in the home by consumers, marble and stone are finding their way into bathtub design. Some designers are creating freestanding styles with metal stands that seem to float in the air, despite these being very heavy. The natural veining of the marble creates a sense of movement in an otherwise substantial-looking piece. The overall atmosphere is reminiscent of a spa.

Colorful tubs. Think beyond white or beige. One option is bold and bright, making the bathtub the focal point of the room. Statement tubs are available in black, red and other bold colors that will add character to your room.

Centered tubs. Designers are looking for ways to make the tub the focal point of the room by centering it rather than having it against a wall. While these tubs will add drama, there are some practical considerations for this layout to work. Your bathroom also needs to be large enough to accommodate the size of the tub and allow you to move around the room.

Finally, think about faucets. They are an important décor element in creating just the right bathroom aesthetic. Bold faucet colors are trending, including black matte, gold and bronze finishes.

Polls show that the average person spends between 15 and 30 minutes taking a bath. You will certainly want to spend more time than that luxuriating in any one of the trendier tubs featured here. Contact us to soak up some more ideas on remodeling your current bathroom.
