WILL THEY OPEN THE DOOR FOR TRUE REGIONALIZATION?
It was recently announced that the City of Macedonia formed a “Charter Review Commission”. I feel that this presents an excellent opportunity for its appointed members to update one area of its charter that has impeded any serious effort to form a true Fire or Safety District for the Nordonia Hills communities.
In early 2006, the Nordonia Hills communities retained the services of John D. Preuer & Associates, Inc., to produce a study involving the proposal for a “Fire Service Cooperative Enhancement Study”. Several meetings followed but once it was discovered that Macedonia’s charter would not allow for a true Fire District, the talks broke down and communities pulled out.
A true Fire District would function similarly to how our School Board functions. The four communities would fund and administer the District through elected or appointed Board members representing each community. However, this cannot occur until both Macedonia and Northfield Village change their respective charters.
The current restrictive language contained in Macedonia’s charter has been the bone of contention several times since the original 2006 Preuer study. This is a fact that I have brought up numerous times, especially during our recent Fire Levy that failed and forced us into contracted Fire and EMS services with Macedonia. This will continue to block any serious future efforts towards true regionalization of our safety services.
The Charter Review Commission should be encouraged to take a proactive approach to effect the needed changes for future serious talks on any form of regionalization. If not, those talks would be nothing more than just more talk with no results.
A Charter change now would not require immediate changes in any safety services but it would provide the tools needed for the future!
WHERE’S THE JUSTICE AND THE MONEY?

To Judge Alison Breaux;
The taxpayers of both Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills Townships are all victims of the theft in office perpetrated by the former fiscal officer of the Northfield Center-Sagamore Hills Fire District, Rosemary Barrett. She pled guilty to the charge in your court and you ordered her to pay back over $10,000 in restitution and to perform 100 hours of community service at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Macedonia.
I found it strange and disheartening to learn about this ‘community service’ being imposed and served in a community outside the two communities that suffered from her theft. Why wasn’t this service ordered in OUR communities?
I also discovered that Mrs. Barrett’s husband is allegedly in charge of her service at the church. What is going on here? I view this as a complete sham and if I feel like this I know that the 16,000 taxpayers of our two communities must feel the same way.
It’s also been over a month since your decision and to the best of my knowledge, we have not seen one penny of that $10,172 in restitution!
As an elected community leader, I would like to know what is going on with this case and if you are willing to look into this and provide some answers for us.

The Court is in receipt of your email regarding the above referenced case.
Ms. Barrett is being actively supervised on community control. As such, the Court is limited in its ability to comment on matters directly or indirectly related to the case.
As it pertains to sentencing, a plea agreement between the parties was presented to the Court. Further, at the time of the plea, no objections to the sentence were raised. Concerns regarding restitution, plea agreements between parties and/or sentencing should be directed to the Summit County Prosecutors Office.

Q >>> – What is the status of the new cable company in Northfield Center ?
A >>> – We have heard nothing from the “WOW” cable company since their one and only appearance at a Trustees meeting last year. If or when we hear anything I will let everyone know.
Q >>> – There’s a house on my street (Brandywine Blvd) that has numerous bagged newspapers in the driveway apron. I’m wondering if anyone has checked in on the household? Their address is **** Brandywine.
A >>> – Even though the address is in Sagamore Hills, I checked into your concern because I happen to personally know the owner. The owner was out of state for a while but watches the house closely through the extensive camera system he has. He even saw someone (you?) pick up the papers and put them by the house! When I spoke with him on the phone, he wanted me to thank you for watching over his house!
Q >>> – My apologies if someone already wrote regarding this, but something needs to be done about the massive pot holes on Twinsburg Road between old eight and Jackson heating and cooling. Thank you for any and all help.
A >>> – I have received several similar complaints regarding this situation and informed the County Engineer’s Office since this is a COUNTY road. I have again requested their attention through our Township Administrator and copied the request to our Service Department and my fellow Trustees.
Q >>> – It looks like they are getting ready to do some major work on Olde 8 north of Brandywine and south of Twinsburg Rd. I can’t find any info on the detour or length of disruption. Do you know anything?
A >>> – This question came up at last Monday’s Trustees meeting. County Engineer representative, Eugene Wilson, said that they are planning repaving work in that area but could not give an exact schedule or any more details.
Q >>> – The potholes on Twinsburg Road are ridiculous. My tire was flattened when I hit one and I know of another family who had damage done to there car. Who is going to pay for the damage and how do I go about getting compensated?
A >>> – I am really sorry to hear about the damages done to your vehicle and others. First of all, Twinsburg Road is a COUNTY road and as such, the Summit County Engineer’s Office is responsible for the road’s maintenance. I would advise you to contact them for answers to your compensation questions. I have included the email exchange below to show that once we heard the first complaint about the potholes, we contacted and informed the Engineer’s Office on February 22nd and they acknowledged it by their response on the same day:

Q >>> – I live in Rolling Brook and am wondering why the snowplow leaves such a high pile of snow at the end of my driveway? Last week there were big chunks of snow that stopped me from being able to get into my driveway. Some consideration should be given to blocking driveways like this!!!
A >>> – Last week’s snowfall was a very wet snow that easily clumps when compacted. The whole area was like this. Our Road crew’s primary job is to keep the streets clear and in doing so, all of the snow that they plow has to be put somewhere and that is alongside the roadways. There is nothing that they can do to avoid placing snow at the end of driveways. That’s just the nature of the beast.
Q >>> – I have been trying to find out what’s going on with Vaughn Road. Do you have any idea why it has been closed. I travel that way everyday so I know it closes after a heavy rain fall. Usually for a day or two. It’s been almost a week. Just looking for an answer.
A >>> – Vaughn Road is in Brecksville (Cuyahoga County). I was unaware of this closing and unfortunately I have no answer for you.

Let me be blunt. The real reason for these mass shootings taking place is simple, and yet the REAL reason is NEVER addressed. It is not the guns or even the types of guns of course. And it isn’t exactly about the mental health of the shooters, though that does partially come into play.
The truth is that it has more to do with the treatment being imposed upon the mental health of these shooters. When a mind altering psychotropic prescription drug has a WARNING label that clearly states “may cause mood swings including possible suicidal or homicidal thoughts or tendencies” I believe the real problem becomes quite clear.
Any serious solution would include stronger regulation or totally banning some of these particular prescription antidepressant drugs which nearly every mass shooter has been known to have been taking, or had recently simply just quit taking. Something which can actually trigger the above mentioned tendencies. Some of these drugs already require a signature which waives the pharmaceutical company of any liability due to adverse side effects that they may cause.
Targeting the NRA or an inanimate object is just stupid. Simply debating mental health monitoring without addressing the drugs issue is futile.
