AKRON – New County Sheriff Kandy Fatheree is wasting no time acting on her top priorities. High on her list of goals was to focus on increasing diversity within the Sheriff’s Office and County Jail and improving outreach and relations between the organization and the community. Today she announces the hiring of a newly- created Director of Diversity & Inclusion to spearhead those efforts.

Evis Brinson will be tasked with developing initiatives and programs aimed at increasing diversity within the Sheriff’s Office. Working closely with Sheriff Fatheree and a committee of community leaders, he will identify and address racial and other disparities at all levels of the Sheriff’s Office and Jail. The position is a rework of an existing administrative role, and is fully-financed from already budgeted monies.

Brinson has more than fifteen years of nonprofit and advocacy experience, predominantly working with underprivileged and marginalized communities. He currently oversees the Summit County Think Tank Coalition, the Summit County Jail Voter Registration initiative, a community collaborative aimed at reducing recidivism. He sits on the boards of the International Soapbox Derby and the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority’s Building for Tomorrow program, and has previously served on the County Executive’s Advisory Council for Diversity & Inclusion. Brinson is a graduate of Firestone High School, and studied Business at the University of Akron. He and his wife and four children reside in Copley.

“Mr. Brinson’s experience and long-established relationships within our community – including those with law enforcement – make him a great fit for this very important role,” said Fatheree.
