SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—In 2022, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro’s Division of Animal Control provided services and care to 1191 cats and dogs. In keeping with its mission, Animal Control offered compassionate and effective care to each animal that found itself in the facility.
In the last year, 533 dogs were adopted into new homes and 229 were redeemed by their owner. 423 cats were adopted into new homes and 6 were redeemed by their owner. Throughout the year, Animal Control held seven special events to raise awareness about animals in need of adoption, including the Betty White Challenge, Clear the Shelters and the end of year Pawlidays holiday event.

Our team works diligently to give them the best care possible. Their hard work paid off with nearly 1200 animals reuniting with their owner or finding a new forever home. Animal Control also joined the GOODS program in 2022, a partnership with Greater Goods Charities. The GOODS program provides pet supplies like food and litter to distribute to local rescues and pantries to stretch dollars and assist more pets and people. Animal Control is working with local charity, Peanut’s Pet Pantry to distribute the supplies in the community. At two free pet food giveaway events in November and December, Animal Control provided hundreds of pounds of food and cat litter to 471 pets.
There are still plenty of dogs and cats in need of homes. Individuals interested in adopting can call 330-643-2845 or stop by 250 Opportunity Parkway to learn more about animals available for adoption. The adoptions cost for dogs is $94 and $50 for cats. The animals are fully vetted, which includes bloodwork, flea treatments, intestinal de-worming, spay or neuter, and vaccinations. Those who adopt a dog will be required to purchase a 2023 Summit County Dog License for $18.
