MACEDONIA, Ohio – The Nordonia Hills Branch Library will temporarily close its doors for up to 12 months starting Saturday, August 1, to undergo an extensive renovation project titled “Building Our Future.” Managed by the Akron-Summit County Public Library system, this large-scale infrastructure initiative marks the first major update to the facility since 1999. The project will bring essential structural repairs and modern community amenities to the Nordonia Hills community, ensuring the facility’s longevity and relevance for years to come.
What to Expect From the “Building Our Future” Renovation
The upcoming “Building Our Future” renovation will address critical infrastructure needs while heavily modernizing the interior layout. Key upgrades to the Nordonia Hills Branch Library include the installation of highly requested private study rooms, completely updated dedicated areas for children and youth, and extensive repairs to the building’s roof. Because the last significant construction on the site occurred over two decades ago, these extensive updates require a complete, year-long closure of the physical building to ensure public safety and accelerate construction timelines.
August 1 Town Hall and “See You Later!” Celebration
To mark the beginning of the “Building Our Future” initiative, the library will host a public town hall meeting and a summer finale celebration on Saturday, August 1, which is also the final day the building will be open to the public. The schedule for the afternoon includes:
-
1:00 p.m. – Town Hall Meeting: Library administration and representatives from Bostwick Design Partnership (the architectural firm handling the redesign) will present sneak peeks of the new layout, discuss community naming rights opportunities, and answer public questions.
-
1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Community Event: A “See You Later!” finale featuring face painting, balloon art, and carnival games for children, alongside karaoke for teens and adults. Complimentary food will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the Library.
How to Access Library Services During the Closure
Despite the physical building being closed, Nordonia Hills Branch Library staff will remain actively engaged throughout Northeast Ohio. To maintain continuous access to literary materials, the library will deploy a mobile Book Trailer in the branch parking lot. The Book Trailer will allow patrons to pick up holds, browse selections, and check out or return items.
The outdoor book drop will also remain fully operational 24/7. Mobile Book Trailer hours are scheduled as follows:
-
Every Tuesday: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
-
Third Saturday of each month: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Offsite community programming for all age groups will continue at alternative local venues. Dates, locations, and times for these events will be updated continuously on the official Akron-Summit County Public Library website. Residents looking for more information or wishing to track construction updates can visit akronlibrary.org/building-our-future or contact branch leadership directly at 330-643-4682.
