(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office will receive $84,015 from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to support its response team for overdose survivors, part of a statewide grant program announced this week.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson’s office awarded more than $2.5 million in grants for the current fiscal year to help communities connect survivors of opioid addiction to treatment and recovery. The money went to 38 law enforcement agencies and local governments through the Drug Abuse Response Team, or DART, grant program.
“Overdose survivors need urgent, hands on support to break the cycle of addiction,” Wilson said. “These grants empower local law enforcement and healthcare partners to meet people where they are in their most vulnerable moments and guide them toward lasting recovery.”
How the money will be used
The DART grants fund specialized outreach teams that pair local law enforcement with behavioral health providers. These teams offer around the clock assistance to overdose survivors and their families, including connections to immediate treatment, recovery support and other resources meant to reduce the risk of future overdoses.
Grants for the fiscal year, which runs through June 30, 2027, range from $20,280 to $149,037. The Attorney General’s Office supplemented $1.5 million in General Assembly funding with $1 million in settlement funds to build this year’s pool of money.
Other Northeast Ohio recipients
Several other agencies serving Northeast Ohio also received DART funding this cycle. Akron Fire Department was awarded $47,294. Cuyahoga Falls Police Department received $52,630. Medina County Sheriff’s Office was granted $59,576, while Portage County Sheriff’s Office received $85,824. Strongsville Police Department was awarded $89,043, and Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office received $56,381.
The DART program began in 2017 and many of this year’s recipients have received the grant in previous years, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
