Ask Your Local Audiologist: What is a looping system?

Question: What is a looping system?

Answer: A hearing loop is an assistive listening system that can be accessed using a telecoil. Looping systems are most common in large venues such as movie theaters and auditoriums but they can also be found in museums, banks, and fast-food restaurants.  If you see the symbol pictured below, a looping system is available for use. A wire is placed around the perimeter of the desired area. This wire creates a magnetic field that transmits the desired signal from a microphone to an amplifier. A telecoil, located in a hearing aid or headset provided by the facility, picks up the signal from the amplifier allowing distortion-free speech to be delivered to the listener. Use of a looping system is ideal for environments with poor acoustics and ambient noise.
