Northfield Center Trustee Meeting: Police Levy To November Ballot, Meijer Still MIA

Trustees are hoping if the voters pass a 3-mill continuing levy it will bring in enough cash for potentially rising police protection costs.

Trustees passed legislation on July 11 to place another continuing 3.0 mill levy on the November 7 ballot to pay policing service through 2026.

The legislation was also passed asking the Summit County Fiscal Officer to certify the current tax valuation for the Township along with the dollar amount of revenue generated by the levy, if passed.

The levy amount could not be enough, according to Trustees. The current levy generates about $850,000 a year which pays for a police contract with the Summit County Sheriff’s Department.

However, the next contract with the Sheriff’s Office could cost the Township $950,000 in 2024 or even as much as $1 million due to contractual increases and pending litigation.

If the levy does not raise enough cash, Township officials will have to ask voters for an increased amount.

Meijer still not communicating.
Northfield Center Township officials are confident Meijer would like to open a superstore on 25 acres of land on State Route 82 – or they used to be.

Since Meijer commissioned a 2021 road study and found out the Michigan-based company must complete about $3.5 million in road improvements before it can open, company officials have been quiet.

According to Township Trustees, the company has yet to purchase any area property.

“They are at a standstill right now,” Trustee Rich Reville said. “It could be a year from now or it could be 20 years from now. You never know.”
