The energy and excitement was noteworthy this past weekend as the boys and girls swim and dive teams took part in the Northeast Ohio District Swim Meet, and the crowd cheered them on. This was the largest contingent of athletes from Nordonia to have competed at this event, and all of the swimmers had great swims. The boys finished 21st and the girls finished 10th out of 45 teams overall.
Noah Beaver in the 100 butterfly and also the 200 Individual Medley, Paul Yorkievitz in the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 free. Noah Holtz also placed in the 500 free. Scoring points in the relay events were Jimmy Alexander, Michael Gruber, Noah Beaver, Colton Francis, Patrick Newyear and Noah Holtz. Colton Francis also participated in the diving event.
The girls 200 free relay team of Hailey Kaminski, Reanna Turk, Abby Pohlmeyer and Emily Yorkievitz made the podium placing 5th overall, breaking the school record they had set a week earlier. The 400 free relay team consisting of Emily Yorkievitz, Abby Pohlmeyer, Ari Smajlovic and Hailey Kaminski broke the school record for the 4th time this season. Also scoring points in relays were Payton Pelkowski and Madisyn Reville. “Our assistant coaches have really been working hard with our relays all year and the 200 free relay team just missed states by a few places. Also, they are all coming back next year! We definitely have a lot of positives to build on,” said Coach Yorkievitz enthusiastically.
Scoring in individual events were Ari Smajlovic in the 100 Backstroke, Emily Yorkievitz who made the podium in the 200 free also adding points to the 100 free, Hailey Kaminski with two podium finishes in the 50 free and earning a silver medal in the 100 back. Amanda Larsen, Loris Jensen, and Emily Schonauer all had solid performances in the diving events.
The Knights also had two swimmers qualify for the state meet in Canton, Ohio next week; Hailey Kaminski in both the 50 free and 100 back, and Emily Yorkievitz in the 200 Free. “We set states as a goal at the beginning of the year and to have these two girls both reach it as sophomores was extremely satisfying”, Coach Yorkievitz shared. “Emily got us started with the first individual race of the meet and that got everyone going. Hailey’s second place finish in the 100 back was one of the most exciting races at the meet. A Silver medal against this level of competition is quite an achievement.
